Rotary is a worldwide organisation of business, professional and community leaders. Clubs are non-political, non-religious and open to all cultures, races and creeds.

Richly rewarding, Rotary International gives you the opportunity to ‘pay it forward’ and to have a positive impact wherever you choose. While developing business networking opportunities and building lifelong friendships Rotarians experience personal growth in an organisation that is respected worldwide for its high values and standards. The magic of Rotary is that it allows ordinary people to achieve the most extraordinary things.

Brief History of Brisbane Inner West

The club was chartered on 28 May 1964, as the Rotary Club of Rocklea, with 26 Charter members. The Charter President was Hunter Perkins and the Secretary was Jim Dowrie.  The club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of South Brisbane. At the time, it was part of Rotary District 260 before subsequent District numbering changes, The DG was Allan A Maskell. The club name was changed in 2011-12 to Brisbane Inner West.

Early projects included the purchase and installation of hospital equipment, the establishment of a kindergarten centre, and assistance with the development of the Chelmer Home for Handicapped Children.

Other early projects included an industrial therapy unit in 1966 – 68, for which the club received a Significant Achievement Award from RI. an Endeavour food handling facility for disabled workers, providing over $200,000 in 2012 – 14 towards a new building and landscaping.

Currently the club supports Zephyr Education which provides uniforms and books for children moved to safety as a result of domestic violence. Other support is provided to victims of bushfires through the supply of caravans and other living necessities like water tanks as well as providing funds to a group of volunteer ladies who make patchwork quilts for children in hospital with cancer.

During the Rocklea period the Club was heavily involved in youth exchange but as numbers shrank it became too difficult. In 2019 we took in a student from Switzerland. Since 1994 we have combined with Corinda and Graceville State Schools to provide Rotary Junior Community Awards.

The club is a strong supporter at District level. Two members have served as District Governor, Nick Dyer in 1982 – 83 when the District was D963, and Brian Price in 1995 – 96. The club is a regular supporter of DIK. Currently we have no members on District

The club has sponsored four Rotary clubs, Acacia Ridge (now defunct) in 1972, Jindalee in 1979, Archerfield in 1984 conjunction with Salisbury and Acacia Ridge, and Forest Lake in 1996 in conjunction with Jindalee.

Internationally the club is a strong supporter of The Rotary Foundation, with emphasis on “End Polio Now”. In 2001-02 the club donated a 22 seat school bus to St Jude’s School in Tanzania, in the early days of the school.
